Things I Thought I Needed for My Apartment (But Didn’t) And What Actually Changed Everything
Let’s call it what it is: decorating a home is overwhelming.
Between Pinterest boards, furniture hauls, and every influencer telling you to “just style a corner,” it’s easy to buy all the wrong things and still feel like your place is missing something.
So here’s a list of things I thought would transform my space and what actually did.
❌ Didn’t Need: A million tiny decor items
You know the ones, ceramic hands, stacked books, random gold objects with no purpose.
✅ Actually Needed: One bold piece
A ripple-edge mirror. A curved chair. A standout sideboard.
Something with presence. Something you notice.
Everything else falls into place when one thing leads.
❌ Didn’t Need: A full set of matching furniture
Newsflash: you’re not furnishing a hotel lobby.
✅ Actually Needed: Pieces that vibe, not match
A warm-toned coffee table with a stone tray? Yes.
A sculptural lamp next to a creamy accent chair? Absolutely.
❌ Didn’t Need: Trendy prints I saw on TikTok
They looked cool for 3 minutes and then gave me personality crisis.
✅ Actually Needed: A mirror I actually love looking into
Preferably one with a soft frame or ripple edges. Bonus if it makes the room feel twice as big.
❌ Didn’t Need: Five types of baskets for “storage”
Spoiler: they were all empty.
✅ Actually Needed: Better lighting
A paper shade floor lamp changed the entire energy of my room.
Overhead lighting is a scam and I stand by that.
❌ Didn’t Need: A hundred throw pillows
They just ended up on the floor every night.
✅ Actually Needed: One textured rug
Neutral, grounding, soft underfoot = instant elevation.
(And way more impact than any cushion collection.)
The Real Secret?
I stopped decorating for “what it should look like” and started asking:
“What do I want to feel when I walk in?”
Now my home feels like a deep breath, not a to-do list.
